Second Sunday of Advent
John the Baptist is presented as a little crazy in the Gospels. As one who lives in the desert, he grew close to the Lord and his ultimate calling. In his depths, he knew he would announce the coming messiah yet his joy was incomplete in his waiting.
Upon baptizing Jesus, John saw the fulfillment of his life in Jesus being the Son of God. In friendship with Jesus, his child-like joy that was first felt in the womb is revealed and complete. John in his personhood reflects our own heart to Jesus.
Advent is the time of the renewal of our friendship with Jesus. The One who knows all our dislikes, likes, frustrations, favorites, joys, and sorrows draws close to us as we open our hearts in receptive friendship of Him. For this friendship is one of complete and utter joy.
